June said that this with be another "Brain explode" strip, but I disagreed.. I mean, it's not like anyone thought that this zombie was just going to fall into a vortex or anything... He's just been incapacitated and ignored...

On a completely different note, the Phantom's face in panel four made me laugh out loud :D I thought June did really well on that one :)

By the way, if you haven't figured it out yet, I don't think that this or the next comic is going to assauge your concerns. Soooo the last comic is all you get to figure out why things aren't as they appear within the first 5.

Anyway, I hope you guys had a great Mother's Day, and thank you to all the Moms who have played a part in my life. Especially my own Mom and June :D

Given how intelligent Thomas was reputed to be, that two may no longer be a two...

ha ha .. The Phantom's expression in panel 3 is great. He's definitely got that "I've got nothing else to try, so this COULD work, right?" attitude. So far it's not looking so good for the Phantom's plans though :)

if i were the phantom I'd be a little more upset than shocked at the new 2 complaining about being an aware 2

I don't think there's really any reason for Robert to become a 7 since the scale is arbitrary anyways, as it's more of a spectrum

@Eternal_Phantom - Nah, the first one brain always turns them into a Two... Also, the text gives him away... Ones and Twos use the Mouthbreather font to indicate the gravelly tone that I picture them speaking in.. So he's a Two :)

@bbedlam - I love his expression :D It made me laugh quite a bit.

@drivinallnight - Phantom didn't even realize he was still kicking around.. He was very 'tunnel vision' previously :)

@Gaijin - You think so? I actually had to dumb down his text to make him sound less intelligent...

@vwyler - Yes, he certainly will be a problem... :D

@Ice the Frosty Cat - Is this really dun dun dunnn worthy though?

@model S - Okay... You're not allowed to carry the guns in the zombie apocalypse...

@Kyo - Respect my authoritah! :D

@Sooty - No, he would have replaced the brain power lost when John crushed the one.

@T. Gatto - Hahaha, at this rate you're going to be cut off of "u"s :) Welcome to Comicfury :D

@DerrickMicheal5 - That's one of my favourite scenes so far ;D

@Kyo - A Six is basically capable of interpreting the universe to the point where he has almost godlike powers... A Seven, if it were even possible would just be moreso... I mean, you're already looking at a six being someone capable of processing faster than a super computer and interpreting it in a way that allows him to have sense of preconception... Actually, now that I've thought about it, I realize what a Seven would be... I highly doubt that the story will ever need that, but I might describe it for purely background information when it no longer contains spoilers :)
Gaijin (Guest) edit delete reply
Well, he seems awfully aware of the situation and its import, just from body language and timing of his interruption. For a newly-made Two, processing off of one eaten brain, this would seem to be a bit much. In fact, from the Phantom's reaction, it's surprising enough to warrant that "brain explode" label.

The other Twos we've seen have either had a childlike mentality, been stuck in behavioral ruts from their former lives (like the perpetual crossing guard), or otherwise amenable to being guided/directed by more intelligent levels of zombie. So why is this one aware enough of what's going on that he can consider messing with the situation?
Magravan edit delete reply
Magravan
Official explanation: Just a fluke of movement that looks more intelligent than it was.

Real explanation: This is one of the instances of a disconnect between writer and artist when the writer doesn't give exact details for every part of the strip... So... it's totally my fault, but I pictured him more dragging himself up and looking bedraggled and pathetic.. Unfortunately, I didn't convey this to June. Oops :) His words are more parroting Phantom than a genuine grasp of the situation and desire to screw it up.

He's definitely a low level Two, no matter how intelligent he might come across... He seems dumber in the next strip, I think...

hmm... i used to think that these were basically run of the mill zombies who just have a bonus incentive to eat brains. But now the pyramid scheme of it makes sense.

Robert was obviously the first zombie, this was pretty easy to figure out. But then how did he know Thomas before the Apocalypse and why were they apparently friends?

My theory: Thomas and Robert were working on some sort of method for a biological supercomputer which possibly requires contact with human bodily fluids to work (or needs to be coated along the entire inside of the cranium). Somebody using this technology would form a one-way link with everyone he personally changed, robbing part of their cognitive skill and adding it to their own. Goal? Become god. side effects include zombies, as apparently this stuff only works if your victims remain somewhat alive (Author states that Rob lost brain power when Thomas killed the one). This would also explain Robert's desire to keep all ones alive, even though they are a hindrance to his society.

meh. ranting post is ranting. wondering how much i got right tho.

umh but my arm cannon is solar powered and has unlimited ammo? did i mention it's melded to my DNA so no one else can fire it? >.>

but seriously it probably would be a bad idea to give me anything other than a revolver and a sniper rifle. (i'd actually conserve ammo with those)

great work so far. i can't wait for more.

same TOGM time, same TOGM channel, same TOGM.
Thisguy (Guest) edit delete reply
eh, my choic of weapon would be an Imperial class Star Destroyer (the Death star would be overkill... and expensive to run), barring that, Magic powers, nothing says 'die zombie' like incinerating them with fire magic.
Anyway, getting more interesting, looking forward to more, especially more fact finding out, Phantom needs a plan.
Also, do we actually know for sure that Robert is actually a ZOMBIE, all we know is that he's higher than all other zombies, but no confirmation that he got there the same way as they did. (though a level 5 zombie is so far from the typical definition of zombie anyway, that we almost need a new term for it, something in the realm of superbeing...)
Magravan edit delete reply

@FallingWolf - Our zombies are definitely different... There are instances when they look and act like the typical zombies that you see on the screen, but that's a very specific case and it's part of the continuum, rather than the defining factor :)

Interesting theory ;)

@model S - Some people just aren't cut out to be the gun carrying members of the survivors... DNA matched gun arm where you're shooting indiscriminantly is still more trouble that it's worth...

I played Resident Evil 4 with a friend of mine, and I remember spending the first few portions of the game running up and knifing everyone to conserve ammo, and then when it was his turn, he'd just mow them down with WAAAAY more power than he needed... I laughed my butt off, and we had a great time, but I think that if it ever came down to a real life situation, I don't think I'd give him first choice in the gun room :D

@Thisguy - I just watched a video of a fully automatic shotgun last night being shot after being submerged in water.. So aside from the fact that it only had 20 shots or so, I think I'm biased towards that at this point in time :D

I'm with Wolf here... cloud computing. What better way to harness the computational powers of the most advanced supercomputers on the planet.

...Except the part I don't get is how 'eating' the brain helps.
FallingWolf edit delete reply
one thing i just noticed... why did Thomas lose his contact lenses? If this was intentional then something strange may be going on here, though I don't think that J+J would undo killing off the main character in any way (it would just be cheesy)... else i should think this will be edited fairly quickly.
Magravan edit delete reply

@the_brigand - Hmmmm, I guess that would explain the entire outbreak, wouldn't it? :)

@FallingWolf - Something fishy is certainly going on. I think that it's pretty obvious at this point, but I will accept that I have a different perspective than the casual reader... But I think that if people spend the time to go back and read into the strips and their titles, they'll see what I've done.
model S (Guest) edit delete reply
yea that's me and my brother there. but in metal gear solid i conserve all my ammo i almost never use anything other than the knife and CQC and the mkII (tranq gun). to be honest i always go for headshots in halo too. i think it's only zombies i mow down.

I know what the twist is in the previous strip a red car ran over the zombie's.
We never saw John get out of beth's care and he never said he was looking for R.Z before he was killed in the desert.
So that isn't John it's a clone or an unknown twin.

LeoFire (Guest) edit delete reply
I think that John is the clone, and the one who was killed was the "real" Thomas. John is a clone, and taken by the two's sent to rescue Thomas. Thomas still escapes, but the two he talks about are the ones sent to rescue him, not RZ
FallingWolf edit delete reply
The problem with the clone idea is that J+J said they wanted to kill john/thomas to further the plot.

"I've always wanted to tell a story where it begins with one hero that you get attached to, and then he gets killed and the rest of the story is basically focused on another character that is being introduced"

This entire point pretty much becomes moot if it turns out that "He was a clone the whole time!" then it kills the dramatic loss of Thomas's humanity. It would be a very cheesy writing ploy and I don't think that it would happen in this comic.

still puzzling over the contacts though. Thomas's eyes are originally brown, and it seems weird that an exact duplicate of him would have the same orange/yellow contact lenses. Also the contact lenses still magically disappear upon the death and transformation... I will have to puzzle about this even more.

He wasn't a one!? D**k! SOrry for the swearing lately, but if I didn't like the comic, I wouldn't care strongly enough TO swear? (No, I'll never uncensor my swearing so it's not me 'not fully caring', though I have been LAZY enough not to censor myself)

if thomas was robert's best friend why did thomas undermine him by showing phantom how to become untrackable?

If you're still wondering that at the end of the comic, feel free to ask it on the Q&A :) I'm pretty sure it was explained though :)
