And by astonishing coincidence, those scribbles precisely match the answers of a .... category 16?! Wow. These standardized tests just aren't what they used to be...

Thanks for checking out Thursday's TOGM, hope you enjoyed the strip!

R.Z. clearly didn't like some of the questions... His punchline suffered from his dialogue options... I didn't feel right using some of the words I wanted to use for the joke, but I think that it would have gone better had I done so... Basically "Oh please! As if Sylene would know this!"

So, anyone else looking forward to Hallowe'en? I'm of two minds about it, myself. We were pretty broke for a while, and so we weren't able to get the kids some of the costumes that they wanted... Which kind of sucks... But we have a new house to do candy in! So that's awesome! I'm looking forward to my costume this year, which is basically going to consist of a pot with a flashlight attached to it and a broom... ;) I'll probably wear a TOGM shirt too... Shame I gave away the TOGM logo one to Hedgehogboy ;) Maybe I'll wear a Bunneh one, just for the hell of it ;D

Have a great weekend!

Oops I forgot to comment! I was busy making a Kingdom Hearts Logo for my son, who is using if for his Haiku book cover for school. "Kingdom-Ku" lol. I love doing this stuff!

Any way, Hi everyone! Thanks for your wonderful comments on the 100-th comic and the video! Very touching and encouraging :)

Haha, sounds like RZ and I share a common dislike for anything test related. I bet we'd be best of pals, he'd try to eat my brains and I'd try to whack him with a crowbar.

Haha yeah... The start of a beautiful friendship, I'm sure ;P

@VampireWombat - More like performance rage :)

@MarshmallowGherkin - I think it will be pretty nifty if people ever start genuinely dressing up as our characters :)

If there's a TOGM Dress-up Convention, I call dressing up as Beth.
Magravan edit delete reply
Magravan
Given how many characters we actually have, we'd either have the lamest convention ever, or a lot of people would be doing the same character :P

Edit: 2nd Lamest. We wouldn't have to deny entrance to customers whose money we took...
Jrade edit delete reply
Jrade
Yeah, but once you run out of specific characters, you can just be someone from that universe.

You do have a fair few characters, moreso than many other webcomics...leastways that's my experience.

Edit: Who turns away paying customers?

ranger_brianna_new
You can certainly feel the influence, there. To be fair, there's pretty much nobody who hasn't encountered the situation of, "Oh, come on, *insert someone who should know* wouldn't be able to get this!" :P

@JRade - That's true, we have tons of characters, just most of them are side characters barely worth notice ;)

And FanExpo this year oversold or something, and turned away people who had bought weekend tickets..

@ranger_brian_new - Yes, that's probably true ;) I felt like that for my Air Navigator test.. "Grade tens know this?!" Granted, it was quite a few years since I'd been in Grade 10 math, but damn.

QUESTION!
Why does RZ have that teeth gap?
3.4 (Guest) edit delete reply
@MatthewJA
BOOT TO THE HEAD
Any more questions?

I'm wondering-would a stupid person's brains be less potent than like say an astrophysicist? (Though some of them are pretty stupid-LOOKIN AT YOU HAWKING! LOOKIN AT YOU!) Or is more the quality and flavor of their knowledge-worldy vs book vs moral vs sitcoms/daytime tv.

Still...maybe he should try studying first?

*Geeze the nerve of that guy what a freakin idiot! Hawking you stupid mumble grumble rumble rant rant rant blah d dah d dah......!@#%$ $%^## ^%&&&$#@%$% #@#@%!!!!!!!!

Aw! Poor RZ! Tests can't measure how smart you are, only how well-educated. That's not fair. Besides, lots of smart people don't do tests well. I hope there's another way to measure?
Guest (Guest) edit delete reply
Damn... RZ has a long tongue (in panel 1 anyway).

As Magravan says, the dialogue does kind of suffer a bit , since we don't get to see what kinds of questions are actually on the test. Of course I'm not sure that RZ trying to use Sylene as a role model for tests is his best option...

Awww RZ...I don't like tests either. *pats head*
And I <3 Halloween! Though I'm just handing out candy this year...I'm still dressing up! (with a combo of a lot of old costumes from toehr things) I'manna be little red riding hood! xP
And for short on time costumes, I've found that being the floor of a movie theater is pretty impressive. Just pop some popcorn and get some glue to look like spilled drink, glue it to a black t-shirt, and everybody thinks you're awesome. xD

@GG That reminds me. One year I was static cling. I just pinned socks/etc. to my shirt. Epic costume.

@MatthewJA - Honest reason? Our son was missing those two teeth when we were coming up with concepts, and having based R.Z. on him, he is missing the two front teeth. Our son obviously grew those teeth back in, but it's stuck around...

We were actually just batting around the idea of a storyline about those teeth (I suggested a mini-comic), so something might come up in the future ;)

@3.4 - He has been studying, actually. Beth has been trying to help him develop without brains for years... Now she's testing him post-brains...

@PixieSingsBass - It's a very specific test, and is probably more relevant to their actual category than standardized testing in real life.

I know exactly how you feel though. My son is a clever little guy, but he doesn't like to perform... He counted to 13 spontaneously when he was far younger than he should have been, but the moment we tried to show anyone else, he wouldn't do it.

In real life, I'm not a big proponent of standardized testing that decides anything about people... Either it forces people to teach to the test, which means that they get a limited education, or they get told that they are not intelligent or something, when that's not the case.

Having taken a few of my courses on developmental psych and things of that nature, I could talk about this for a long time.. Suffice to say that in TOGM world, the SZC is a valid measure, and is not related to the validity of real world testings :)

@Guest - He certainly does! I think that June takes a few anatomical liberties with R.Z. (the 4 fingered hand should be a clue there) for humour's sake ;)

Also, I don't think that the specific questions will be addressed because once I put them down concretely, people could challenge the validity of the test... And I'm certainly not a category 5 human, so I can't come up with the appropriate questions like Robert did ;P

As for Sylene, she's probably the Three that R.Z. has had the most contact with..

@geekgrrl - Hahaha! That's some clever costuming :D

@hedgehogboy5 - That's a good idea, which are you going as? Be the Line! Everyone loves the Line!

Standardized Zombie Categorization Test ;) I even made an * note in the comic to say so :P

I love RZ! I hear his voice being like the raspy kid's voice from little rascals.
Speaking of Halloween, my mom dressed me up as a bag of leaves. We had clear leaf bags, one over me(I just wore a black sweatsuit) and we put leaves from the yard in there. We had a contest yearly for best costume, in our community. I think I won mostly because there was a moth caught in my leaves and was flying around on the inside of the bag. I also had a paper bag hat with leaves glued to it. My mom was clever yet frugal :D
Magravan edit delete reply
Magravan
That's a really awesome sounding costume :)

Some of my favourite costumes throughout the years were when we were being frugal by using costumes that had been worn the previous years... ;)
Jrade edit delete reply

My favourite costume of all time was a four dollar sport jacket from some pawn shop, combined with a similar-coloured fedora over a long blond wig. I went around basically being a Gimp out of costume...which is way more fun than it sounds...

...and sounds creepier than I meant it...
Magravan edit delete reply
Magravan
One of my favourites was when I was a 'prop'... I had an "executioner" suit on, which was basically just an all black suit with a hood that covered my head and had two eye holes.. I turned the eye holes to the back, propped myself in the garden on a cross / axe that my brother had designed, and put a witch's hat upside down between my legs full of candy...

Then my brother would tell them "Go help yourself.", and I would reach up with my hand full of candy when they got close enough... Oh man, we put the fear back into Hallowe'en that night :) One kid jumped like 6 feet backwards!

You'd be surprised how many people do stuff like that, Magravan. It works beautifully, especially if you move quickly. :P

Another year I tried to do one where I put out a dummy a few days before Hallowe'en with basically a black track suit and some big pumpkin as a head... Then I went out and switched places with it on Hallowe'en, but it never really had the same effect...

I'd think its a categorisation test, probably based on morals or logic or something that isn't learnable.

I think I'm being the one with the line and then a little 1 square ourcropping to the side at the bottom, we picked some that'd fit together nicely and such.

You're being an 'L'? That's cool... It's not quite as loved as the line, but it's not as annoying as the Zig-zag one...

I think that it would be nifty to see you guys all standing together interlocked in a doorway :D
